In the 1940s, photographer Gjon Mili pioneered the art of stroboscopic photography. For drummer Rich Westley, Mili’s images of jazz legend Gene Krupa playing the snare were an inspiration. Rich invited photographer Tracey Welch to join him in attempting to recreate the pictures using modern-day techniques. The resulting imagery sparked a shared exploration of the stroboscopic process. Further sessions, including producer Dean Honer and his theremin, showed how this visual effect uniquely reveals the relationship between musician and instrument.

During the pandemic, with the world of live music on hold, Arts Council England funding enabled a fully-fledged, Stroboscopic Project. From a virtual ensemble of six, diverse musicians, further imagery emerged, with additional content including a stop motion style film sequence, together with a unique musical soundtrack.

Through photography, composition, performance, and film, the Stroboscopic Project examines all aspects of connection, a theme that feels particularly relevant, in the context of physical disconnection we have all recently experienced.

Sensoria and South Street Kitchen have worked together to pair food and music for a six-course tasting menu.
Our unique gathering explores whether ‘sonic seasoning’ can help enhance taste.

South Street Kitchen’s head chef Dave Hussey has created a six-course tasting menu and Sensoria will be acting as ‘sound sommeliers’, complementing each course with curated music and sounds designed to enhance the dining experience. This is an idea we have hoped to explore for some time and you will help us decide to what extent music can influence elements of taste in this way.

 

Sweet pickled heritage carrot salad, fresh curds, citrus dressing

Confit vine tomato, ‘tom yum’ tomato essence, lime ‘snow’

Caramelised aubergine, fennel dhal, crispy shallot

Cured and charred cucumber, Szechuan and sesame dressing, puffed rice.

Watermelon and pomegranate granita

Aerated milk chocolate mousse, ginger poached plum, candied hazelnut brittle

 

Sound Bites is planned as a shared listening experience. We’ll also be providing some QR codes, linking you to curated tracks for specific courses, in case you would prefer to focus on the food and music and in your own time (please bring some earphones).

All the dishes are vegan except the carrot and dessert which can be made vegan by prior request. The menu is also gluten-free. On this occasion, due to the nature of the menu, South Street Kitchen will be unable to cater for any other dietary requirements or allergies as it would affect the flavour profile.
Please request vegan options when booking.

An additional bespoke Sensoria cocktail will be available to purchase on the evening.
Drink pairings will also be available.

Tubular Bells, one of the iconic musical works of the 20th century, and the highest-selling instrumental album of all time is approaching its 50th anniversary. To mark this, an epic new stage production has been commissioned that re-invents the album with an incredible cinematic score, live musicians and performers.

This all-new contemporary masterpiece incorporates the beauty of the original music with dance and acrobatic feats that create not only a visual spectacle but also a musical tour-de-force.

The show also includes Moonlight Shadow, Mike Oldfield’s biggest single hit, along with Summit Day, from his Guitars album, and The Gem, a new work by Musical Director Robin Smith.

Filmed at the world-famous Royal Festival Hall over three ground-breaking nights, this is a magical concert that is not to be missed.

When she loses her key artist (and childhood friend), Doris must find a new talent and suffers doubts about her future and career path. Then she meets Jacks – another daughter of immigrants for whom making it big isn’t just a dream, but a necessity.

An insightful yet uplifting tale of young Mexican American talent struggling within the music industry and with expectations and identity in a divided United States. With score by Helado Negro.

The film premiered at Sundance 2022 before being acquired as the first feature under the new Disney Original Documentary banner.

A definitive exploration of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen as seen through the prism of his internationally renowned hymn, “Hallelujah.” This feature-length documentary weaves together three creative strands: The songwriter and his times; the song’s dramatic journey from record label rejection to chart-topping hit; and moving testimonies from major recording artists for whom “Hallelujah” has become a personal touchstone.

Approved for production by Leonard Cohen just before his 80th birthday in 2014, the film accesses a wealth of never-before-seen archival materials from the Cohen Trust including Cohen’s personal notebooks, journals, photographs, performance footage, and extremely rare audio recordings and interviews.

A family-friendly day of activities including acoustic music, book and art stall, games, talks, food & drink.

Music acts include Nat Johnson, Nancy Kerr, Grinnigogs and Little Robots.

The event is outdoors.

Feel free to bring a picnic, there will also be some refreshments on-site including B’Reyt Dough pizzas, Locksley Gin and more.

Fancy dress / red and green theme optional.

The venue is near what is believed to be the site of the birthplace of Robin of Loxley (Little Haggas Croft in Loxley Valley).

Please note that the event site is on the slope of a hill. The site is accessible but assistance may be needed – there is a ‘K Gate’ installed at the entrance to the woodland.

Sorry dogs aren’t allowed as the site is a school field.

• A Sensoria X Launchpad presentation in partnership with Site Gallery.

Rafaël Rozendaal is a Dutch-Brazillian visual artist who uses the internet as his canvas. His websites attract 40 million visits per year. Permanent Distraction is Rafaël Rozendaal’s first UK solo exhibition.

Sheffield-based band Sister Wives will play live within this immersive backdrop of large-scale floor-to-ceiling abstract projections.

Each performance is approx. 30 minutes.

The Afropean Express + live soundtrack by Bare Knuckle Soul + Q&A + short films

Afropean—Notes From Black Europe is a book that traces the steps and experiences of Sheffield writer, journalist and photographer Johny Pitts as he examines the life of black communities, whilst travelling across Europe. In search of the “Afropean” identity, he sketches an underexposed story about the continent in words and images.

The Afropean Express is a short film, music and audio piece made by Johny and long term collaborator Chris ‘Finguz’ Morris as an attempt to capture the unique multi-sensory experience of voyage, place and discovery. It was made on a week-long trip through some of the book’s key locations and train journeys, including the (now scrapped) historic ‘Le Train Bleu’ night train from Paris to Marseilles. The film features the voices of many of the writers and social commentators Johny met and interviewed on his journey, with location sound recordings, an original score and spoken word. The pair will present and discuss the creative process of making the film and perform the soundtrack live in their guise as Bare Knuckle Soul.

The evening will also feature a debut screening and performance of Spirit Of Dead Buildings (10 mins) which is to be the first chapter of a new multimedia project based on the histories and lives of the former residents of now demolished Sheffield blocks of flats. This will also feature illustrated animations by Sheffield artist Cole Morris aka Esu.
