In XFRMR, Robbie Thomson harnesses the power of the Tesla coil, the 19th century invention that first made electricity visible. Thomson’s musical accompaniment – a soundtrack played on laptop and synthesiser, by turns melodic and soothing, then pulsing, skittering and searing – strikes visuals from the coil, sending light signals flaring through the Faraday cage that contains it. A unique sensory phenomenon.
Please note: This performance contains flashing images, loud noise and can cause possible magnetic interference with pacemakers.
Suitable for ages 14+.

As one half of the electronic music sensation Goldfrapp, the keyboard-player and composer Will Gregory is passionate about using synthesizers and electronic instruments to create new sounds and reinvent old ones.
His Moog Ensemble brings together a stellar line-up of musicians to perform a mix of specially composed music, transcriptions of classical works, and their own versions of music from popular culture and film scores.
On stage audiences can marvel at 10 musicians, including Portishead’s Adrian Utley and composer Graham Fitkin, perform a fascinating collection of vintage instruments.

MODULAR MEET

SEMINAR PROGRAMME
Due to many of last year’s seminars being full to beyond seating capacity, we’ve booked a larger room this year and brought back Martyn Ware and the Dr Who talk by popular demand.
The Trautonium – Early synth from 1929
James Worthington will talk about this almost forgotten instrument from the early German electronic scene. The talk will feature a live demonstration on what may be the only example in the UK.
Deconstructing the Dr Who Theme
BBC Radiophonic Workshop archivist Mark Ayres will talk about how the theme was created by Delia Derbyshire using tape in the 1960s.

Martin Russ, creator of the ‘Residuals’ approach to synthesis, will give a demonstration of this pioneering method of deconstructing sampled instrument sounds.
Delia Derbyshire
Caro C (project manager of Delia Derbyshire Day) will talk about the late great electronic music composer from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop using examples of her working notes and audio clips from the Delia Derbyshire Archive.
Mars By 1980! The Story of Electronic Music
Author David Stubbs, known for his previous book on Kraftwerk, will talk about his new book covering the earliest of avant-garde sound making machines to current electronic music performers.
VIP Roundtable Discussion
Guests include Richard Barbieri (ex Japan and Porcupine Tree), Katia Isakoff Altersonic, Elizabeth Bernholz of Gazelle Twin and late 1960s synth musician David Vorhaus of White Noise fame.

Flying high off the back of their stunning new album ‘Time Will Die and Love Will Bury it’, Sheffield’s purveyors of post/math-rock Rolo Tomassi return for an intimate hometown show.
Support comes from Brussels-based Fvnerals, returning to the UK after a short hiatus, who combine elements of doom, post-rock, shoegaze and dark ambient.

The Sheffield premiere of the Nerd Disco project from founders/producers & co-writers of The Moonlandingz, Adrian Flanagan & Dean Honer in cahoots with vocalist Leonore Wheatley.
After two successful years of sell out tours, a critically acclaimed album, heavily playlisted singles & incendiary festival appearances across Europe, The Moonlandingz founders and co-songwriters Adrian Flanagan (Eccentronic Research Council) & Dean Honer (All Seeing I) have teamed up with The Soundcarriers & Whyte Horses lead singer Leonore Wheatley for an exciting new ‘nerd disco’ project called INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS OF POP.
The group formed early in 2018 at a ‘Circuit Bending’ workshop in a school in Valhalla Dale, South Yorkshire where Leonore teaches Music.
Their first live appearance was in a cave in Derbyshire (The Devils Arse) by invite from the Lord Mayor of South Yorkshire and misshape pop, JARVIS COCKER.
A month later, after an A&R scramble post a triumphant BBC 6 MUSIC radio session for Marc Riley they signed an album and singles deal with Republic of Music to release their music on their own imprint, DESOLATE SPOOLS.
In the past weeks I.T.O.P. have been wowing crowds at the prestigious Somerset House with another Sheffield outsider Pop Legend, Roisin Murphy and packing out tents at Bluedot Festival at Jodrell Bank. In the coming weeks the group are due to play Green Man Festival and Electric Fields.
With support from special guest TVAM.

* Composing for Film – Masterclass with Ilan Eshkeri
Ilan Eshkeri is an award winning British composer whose extensive catalogue of film & television work includes multiple Oscar & BAFTA winning films, ranging from Still Alice and The Young Victoria through to Shaun The Sheep. Recently, he has co-created two ballets and composed music for astronaut Tim Peake’s Principia mission to the International Space Station. Eshkeri was also commissioned by Burberry for their game-changing autumn 2016 fashion show in London. He will give some insights into composing for film and also talking about his very successful and varied career.
Ilan will be in conversation with Shelley O’Brien (Senior Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University).

* The Value of Publishing in 2018
An overview of the changing landscape of revenue from publishing from changes in Broadcast policy to digital service providers and the importance of syncs. With record levels of royalties being collected and distributed to music creators, in particular revenue from online platforms, this session aims to analyse, discuss and de-mystify the money paid by digital service providers (Spotify, Facebook, Netflix, GooglePlay, Apple Music, YouTube, Soundcloud etc.).
Panelists include Andy Farrow (AMF Music Publishing), Dr Jörn Radloff
(Head of Rights & Repertoire, ICE), writer & singer Eckoes and Jataneel Banerjee from PRS for Music who will also be shedding light on the new Broadcast policy changes and it’s effect on publishing income.

This session will look at how we listen, plus how acoustics and immersive audio could make a difference to our future listening experiences.
Guests include: Trevor Cox, Professor of Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford where he carries out research and teaching focussing on architectural acoustics, signal processing and audio perception. Trevor is also an author and radio broadcaster having presented many documentaries on BBC radio and written books for academics and the general public.
Joe Thwaites, inhouse composer at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who is working on Sony’s first full-length VR game ‘Blood & Truth’, and ‘Dreams’. Joe will also be discussing audio implementation & audio design within VR.
The session will be moderated by Professor Nikki Dibben (University of Sheffield Music Dept)

A unique opportunity for delegates to score or place music to the teaser trailer for a new film The Runaways with the chance to have their submissions critiqued at SensoriaPro by a panel of industry experts led by Ian Neil (Head of Music & Film, Sony) along with Connie Farr (ThinkSync) & Jenna Fentimen (Manners McDade).
The teaser trailer features highlights from the film interspersed with some dialogue.
The filmmakers require a new score or suggested placement that is ‘feel-good, humorous and uplifting but intercut with scenes of sadness and menace’. Vocal tracks might have the keywords, ‘running away’, ‘chase’, ‘escaping’, ‘together’ & ‘family’.

Sheffield Robotics will be on-hand throughout the day to demo teleoperations of robots. You can come and say “Hi” to Pepper the robot.
