Max is a homely 10th-grade scholarship boy at Rushmore, a private school where he fails classes but constantly organizes clubs and plays. He ignores the proffered friendship of a student, Margaret, to pursue the unattainable Ms. Cross. Max discovers Blume also loves her; he seeks vengeance, Blume retaliates, war ensues, and Max’s troubles deepen. Rescue comes from unexpected places, including his sweet father, a barber. Can Max accept a realistic place in the world?

Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) had three children — Chas (Ben Stiller), Richie (Luke Wilson) and Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow). The Tenenbaums were a family of geniuses — geniuses that left home and separated from the family as soon as possible. Chas started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of $50,000 in the ninth grade. Richie was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbuams was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father’s fault. The Royal Tenenbaums details the story of the family’s sudden, unexpected winter reunion.

We are delighted to welcome the Radiophonic Workshop to Sensoria for a special live performance following SynthFest UK.
Founded in 1958 by Desmond Briscoe and Daphne Oram, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was home to a maverick group of experimental composers, sound engineers and musical innovators. In a series of small studios within the labyrinthine corridors of the BBC Maida Vale complex, the Workshop explored new ways of using – and abusing – sound.
Drawing on the principles of musique concréte, found sounds, early electronics, oscillators, handmade synths and tape loops the Workshop created the other-worldly soundtrack to some of BBC television and radio’s most iconic programmes: The Body in Question, Horizon, Quatermass, Newsround, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Chronicle and Delia Derbyshire’s iconic Doctor Who Theme – still the high water mark for British electronic music nearly 50 years after it was recorded.
Now, more than 15 years after the Workshop was decommissioned original members Peter Howell, Roger Limb, Dr Dick Mills, Paddy Kingsland and archivist Mark Ayres are back working together. Variously described by the music press as the ‘electronic Buena Vista Social Club’ (The Observer) and ‘The British Kraftwerk’ (NME) the Radiophonic Workshop are currently enjoying a well deserved renaissance – their pioneering work regarded as a key influence not only on the history and development of rock, pop, electronica and dance music but on a whole new generation of DJs, electronic artists and sound designers.
With their impressive back catalogue being comprehensively reissued on vinyl and CD, an album of new compositions – Electricty – and a live show featuring archive footage from film and TV spanning their extraordinary 55 year career, the rebirth of this pioneering group of British musicians is well and truly underway.
Members of the Radiophonic Workshop will also be giving a talk earlier in the day at SynthFest UK – ‘Deconstructing the Dr Who Theme’. Further details for this can be found on the SynthFest UK site.

Deconstructing the Dr Who Theme
In recognition of what would have been Delia Derbyshire’s 80th birthday, current members of the Radiophonic Workshop will discuss her iconic theme music and demonstrate how it was created. Through the playback of digitised original source tapes from the 1960s, Mark Ayres, Roger Limb, Paddy Kingsland and Peter Howell will bring the music to life and talk about their time at the world famous BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
Ondes Martenot
What the heck is this mysterious instrument? Dorien Schampaert is one of the UK’s leading authorities on this bizarre early electronic music instrument invented in 1928. She will talk about it’s invention, how it works and play recordings of its unmistakable eerie sound.
Mini-Oramics
The legendary Mini-Oramics machine makes a rare public appearance at SynthFest UK.
Daphne Oram was the co-founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and is credited with the invention of a new form of ‘drawn sound’ synthesis – Oramics.
In the 1960s she designed a machine which was the size of a large office photocopier, but then in the 1970s she began work on the Mini-Oramics but it was never completed.
PhD student Tom Richards has re-imagined and built a fully working Mini-Oramics machine and will give a talk and demo before allowing visitors to SF-UK to try their hand at drawing their own musical ideas for the machine to play!
Modular Synth performance in Surround Sound
Based on his research into immersive audio systems for live performance, University of Derby music lecturer John Crossley will talk about surround sound performance with modular synths based on the Sonic Emotion Absolute 3D system. The session will end with a live ‘Modular Jam’ through a multi-speaker setup.

Universal Tree started as a studio project in 2016 fronted by Steve Edwards in collaboration with DJ Parrot aka Crooked Man and Michael Somerset Ward.
Born out of a love of classic soul, funk, psychedelia, dance and RnB, Universal Tree have structured a sound which is at once forward thinking with a classic feel. They’d like people to dance but also to think about what’s going on in the world today.
Steve Edwards has worked with a host of dance music’s most influential names including French dance music alumni Cassius plus Bob Sinclar, Basement Jaxx & Swedish House Mafia’s Axwell. He is 2x Grammy nominated, a World Music Award winner & has 4 US Billboard Dance #1s.
Crooked Man, signed to cool as f*ck NYC DFA Records is the latest incarnation of Sheffield dance music legend DJ Parrot (Richard Barratt) who’s other notable career highlights include Funky Worm & All Seeing I.
Michael Somerset Ward is one of Sheffield’s most successful songwriters having written hits for Alison Moyet, Was Not Was and Take That to name a few.
Their debut album has been recorded with Dave Lewin with single releases set for 2018.
The live set up includes a nucleus of Joe Moscow and Philippe ‘Ninja’ Clegg. Their debut gig proper was part of Tramlines 2017 for the Ka-Bal-Dayer at Sheffield Plug.
Universal Tree say “This event at the fantastic The Big WoW will be special as it will be streamed live online, as part of Sheffield’s Sensoria Music & Film Festival 2017. We are super excited to be asked to be involved!”.
Matic Mouth is a solid figure in the local northern music scene, recent times have seen him as part of hip-hop collective Clubs & Spades, who upon their first release achieved the ‘Record of The Week’ position on Charlie Sloths BBC Radio 1 Rap Show with their single ‘Clearer Coast Ft Tom Prior’. Matic has a very adaptable style and this has led to working with a variety of artists from soul singer Steve Edwards ‘Bob Sinclair – World, Hold On’, indie/rock band Reverend & the Makers ‘Heavyweight Champion of The World’ or more closer to home musically with artists like Coco, MC DRS or producers like Sticky Blood and Toddla T, the latter requesting his voice for an uncredited, spoken word feature on the first single ‘BlackJack 21’ from his new album.
Fresh off the back of two recent ‘one artist, one producer’ collaboration projects, the most recent being ‘VOIR’, an anthemic and amped up E.P. that further cemented Matics scope for creative ability and high level of penmanship. The E.P. was wholly played, highly praised and championed by BBC Radio Sheffield as well as the local BBC Introducing team, making the last two annual ’Top 50 Tracks’ lists, along with being played by Huw Stephens on his respective show.
This brought Matic in to the new year strong, and with an amazing ‘no-hypeman needed’ stage show, he was booked for several live performances, the most notable being the Outlines Festival in Sheffield, where he received rave reviews on his showmanship, after being requested to perform in place of a no-show artist higher on the bill, this again cemented Matic as a performer of the highest calibre. As he approaches mid-2017, Matic finds himself booked for two high profile gigs, a headline slot for BBC Music Day and the opening act for the 2nd Main Stage at the Tramlines Festival.
With his latest offering ‘iWant’, Matic continues to show his scope for creating artistic and conceptual music. The track has already been premiered on BBC Radio Sheffield by DJ Christian Carlisle, again hooking up with Ethan Ryan, who’s last production with Matic also hit BBC Radio. This is a track with a vibe suited for a midsummers evening, with Matic poetically portraying a vision of his world as he sees it and wants it, a world of positivity and higher thinking with people of a mutual understanding. With an amazing video to accompany it, ‘iWant’ is another example of great musical and visual artistry as Matic continues to lead us on a white rabbit tour in to the musical unknown.
