Honey Bee Blues Club presents: TWO TRAINS RUNNIN’ (18)

In June 1964 hundreds of college students, eager to join the civil rights movement, traveled to Mississippi, starting what would be known as Freedom Summer. That same month, two groups of young men, made up of musicians, college students and record collectors, also traveled to Mississippi.  They had both come to find an old blues singer and coax him out of retirement. 30 years before, Son House and Skip James had recorded some of the most memorable music of their era. Finding them would not be easy. Mississippi, that summer, was a tense and violent place. The Ku Klux Klan and police force of many towns vowed that Freedom Summer would not succeed and it was easy to mistake the young men as activists. Finally, on June 21, 1964, these two campaigns collided in tragic fashion.  Two Trains Runnin’ revisits an important moment when America’s cultural and political institutions were dramatically transformed. It all feels very relevant in current times.

• The film itself is 1hr and 20 minutes and will be followed by a live music set from Benjamin Bassford (8.45pm – 9.30pm).

We’re delighted to welcome the return of electronic duo Factory Floor to present the northern premiere performance of their new live score to this sci-fi classic. 2017 is the 90th anniversary of the release of Metropolis. Widely regarded as a pioneering work of cinematic science fiction, Metropolis depicts a dystopian future where a city’s downtrodden, exploited underclass of workers secretly plot a revolt.

• This screening will be the 150-minute reconstructed and restored 2010 version (including 25 minutes of footage previously thought lost to the world)..

Factory Floor are Nik Void and Gabriel Gurnsey, whose intense postindustrial electronic sound is as much at home at raves as it is in art galleries, cinemas, nightclubs and rock shows. They’ve collaborated with members of New Order, Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, and their latest album, 25 25, was released in the summer of 2016 through James Murphy’s influential DFA Records.

Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World tells the untold story of one of popular music history’s most significant omissions. In 1958, Link Wray released the now legendary instrumental track “Rumble”, a song with which he would go on to change the sound of rock ‘n’ roll forever. But his story, like so many others, had one significant aspect all but erased, his Native American heritage. From the blues and jazz, to pop and rock ‘n’ roll, the influence of Native American music has had a profound effect on contemporary music throughout history. 

Politically charged and chock full of powerful footage and iconic music from the last century, ‘Rumble’ is a feast for the eyes and ears and has perhaps never been as relevant as it is today. Featuring interviews with icons such as George Clinton, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Martin Scorsese, Iggy Pop and more, this feature length documentary fills in the missing chapter of popular music and exposes the immeasurable impact Native Americans have had on the music we treasure today.

The Cuckoo Clocks originally formed 10 years ago when Paul Infanti (vocals/guitar) & Sophie Townsend (keys/vocals) joined forces. Over time, the ensemble has seen members come and go but for the last 3 years the latest incarnation has proven to be a winning formula.  Musically completed with Jamie Holmes (bass/vocals), Richard Gibson (guitars/vocals) and Paul Blakeman (drums/vocals) and the last arrival being Tracy Deakin and her powerful vocal force, they can now deliver beautifully crafted songs in a magical way.

In June this year, their second album ‘Frontiers of a Seductive Mind’ was released and to celebrate the occasion a special, collaborative, “for one night only…” event was held at Abbeydale Picture House Cinema.  This sell-out show featured an additional 11 musicians on stage (17 in total) with the likes of strings from the “Up North Session Orchestra”, Matt Howden (Sieben), Steve Edwards (Universal Tree) and Simon Stafford (Longpigs) to name a few. 

As some punter’s commented “Absolutely beautiful evening. A sonic smorgasbord. Thank you. Xx” and “If Carlsberg did gigs they wouldn’t be half the show that the Cuckoo Clocks put on last night.  What a great night and fantastic event!”

The Cuckoo Clocks don’t do shows very often, but when they do they’re special.  This is a rare opportunity to witness another of those magical moments, with special guests, in an intimate location…

Jane Weaver has been a formidable figure in UK music for over two decades, in bands such as Kill Laura and Misty Dixon, and founding Manchester-based Bird Records. Her six self-penned solo albums have brought an ever increasing cult audience and May this year saw her latest body of work ‘Modern Kosmology’ released to great acclaim.  Building on 2014’s superb ‘The Silver Globe’, Weaver’s latest album adds a sprinkling of fairy dust on her dream pop that’s filtered through vintage synthesizers, motorik beats and jangling guitars. People Here is a Sheffield-based ghost pop/post-ghost pop band. Raquel Vogl comes from Washington, DC/New York, where she was a dedicated participant of the long-standing experimental punk music communities there, playing in bands such as The Crainium, Legends, and Meltdown. Neil Piper and Chris Loftus’ previous bands include Public School Battalion, Nat Johnson and the Figureheads, Champion Kickboxer, Smokers Die Younger and Fury of the Headteachers. Claire Williams (aka Myrtle) sang in the Canyon Family and Former Lover (with Dorian Cox of the Long Blondes).

Jean Epstein & Luis Bunuel’s 1928 interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale of paranoia and suspense is considered Cinema’s first true Gothic horror. As his beloved wife Madeleine succumbs to a mysterious illness, Sir Roderick Usher invites his old friend Allan to his castle for support. He arrives to find Roderick consumed with completing a painting of Madeleine, something that seems to draw the life out of her with every brush stroke he makes. Once the picture is finished, Madeleine collapses, and her physician confirms she has passed away – but a ghostly presence invades the house of Usher.

In The Nursery’s new score incorporates sound design along with more traditional instrumentation (including shruti box & ukulele) to encompass the Gothic nature of Epstein and Bunuel’s avante-garde, haunting vision. In The Nursery’s new score is their 8th, their previous track record includes scoring landmark titles such as The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Man with a Movie Camera and The Passion of Joan of Arc.

Fascinating documentary about the intertwining careers of David Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. The film covers the maelstrom of influences that gave birth to Ziggy Stardust and the creation of Transformer and Raw Power – in turn changing the sound of rock music forever. Importantly the film also gives a gentle nod to the influence of Mick Ronson, not only on Ziggy Stardust but also the fact he made an indelible stamp on the sound of Transformer too. With rare footage and contributions from many of those who were there at the time including Angie Bowie.
