Punk-pop band Sløtface, inspired by the riot grrrl movement, want both genders to enjoy being part of the mosh pit. The four young Norwegian activists also draw influence from punk heroes from Patti Smith to The Clash.

 We are excited to announce the return of the 3 Ring Circus to Sensoria 2017, presented by The Red Lodge Agency.

This special occasion event showcases three amazing artists playing three shows, all on the same night. 

Richard Hawley, James Dean Bradfield, and Lou Doillon come together to perform an unmissable event at Sensoria; The 3 Ring Circus.

How does it work?

Each artist acts as opener in a different venue, plays a 40 minute stripped down set then jumps into a waiting car which will speed them to the next location. Then the same again to the last venue.

So each artist becomes the opener, middle act and headline – and they say democracy doesn’t work!

And the audience sits still, maybe has another pint, has a chat in between whilst the artists break all speed restrictions in order to get to the next show.

The only catch is no one knows what order the artists will appear at which venue. So it’s pot luck. But the important thing is you get to see:

Richard Hawley, James Dean Bradfield and Lou Doillon all on the same bill in the most intimate surroundings.

Each of the inner city venues grant a slightly varying experience; allowing the audience to decide for themselves which setting they would like to see the artists in.

The Artists:

Richard Hawley

Sheffield’s Richard Hawley has become synonymous with the city through his 8 solo albums. The last of which, Hollow Meadows, was released in 2016. As well as his own solo career he has worked with a myriad of artists such as Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Nancy Sinatra and Duane Eddy. But as one of the most versatile artists of a generation he has also worked and recorded with bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, Manic Street Preachers and Pulp.

Richard hosts the show as he did last year (which featured John Grant and Bill Ryder-Jones) and arrives in Sheffield this week after having completed another 3 Ring Circus, this time in Paris with John and Lou.

James Dean Bradfield

James is of course best known as the lead singer of Manic Street Preachers who have become one of the legendary British bands over the last 30 years. Classic albums such as The Holy Bible, Everything Must Go and This is My Truth Tell Me Yours along with their more recent Rewind The Film and Futurology contain some of the most poignant and politically aware music of at least one generation and maybe more. His first solo record was in 2006 ‘The Great Western’.

Lou Doillon

Singer Lou Doillon is the daughter of film director Jacques Doillon and actress Jane Birkin and half-sister of Charlotte Gainsbourg – it’s difficult to talk about her without acknowledging her family connections in the French movie and music industry. She started her acting career as her mother’s daughter in Le petit amour in 1988. Then her father offered her her first great role in a movie, Trop (peu) d’amour in 1998. She also became a model and is the face of Givenchy.

Legendary French singer Etienne Daho produced her first album ‘Places’. It won her Best Female Artist at Victoires De La Musique (the French Brits) in 2013. Her 2^nd album ‘Lay Low’ was released in 2015 and went Gold soon after.

Conflicted by creative inertia he has observed from the sidelines whilst what he sees as corporate state propaganda has swamped the airwaves. Now he will attempt to challenge the media consensus through his own radio broadcast. But a request to write a song soon reveals old demons of inertia and bereavement.

The Animal Symphony

Can animals rock to rhythm or recognise a melody? Naturalist and presenter Chris Packham and internationally acclaimed musician and composer Nitin Sawhney believe some can. We’re delighted to welcome them both to SensoriaPro where they will discuss their use of new research, examining how and why certain animals respond to music, that resulted in Nitin’s compositions performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Geoff Barrow in conversation

Geoff Barrow (Portishead, Beak>, Invada Records) will talk about his work on soundtracks such as Alex Garland’s Ex Machina and the forthcoming Annihilation plus scoring, among others, Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire and Black Mirror (5th episode, series 3).
Geoff will also discuss his inspirational and extensive career with Portishead, a hugely successful and vast catalogue of production work, co-founding Invada Records (the label created to promote alternative music and scores to movies and games) and Beak> – the three piece band that formed in 2009, a pure celebration of music creation.

Artist-Friendly A & R with Mike Smith (Warner/Chappell Music)

Mike Smith is MD of the global publishing company and will talk about his experiences spanning 30 years of scouting and signing a huge array of bands from Sheffield’s own Arctic Monkeys to Blur. He’ll give practical advice on working with labels and publishers.

The ever-popular Scoring Contest is back with a focus on music for advertising and a Honda campaign clip. Registered delegates can compose or pitch a piece of music – a shortlist of submissions will then be critiqued on the day by our expert panel of Ian Neil (Director of Music for Film and TV, Sony Music), Rachel Menzies (Native Music Supervision) & Laurence Malpass (Music Gateway).

Lord Sinclair has built up quite a following thanks to this charismatic host’s unique and fun ideas.   Those who attended All Tomorrows Parties (ATP) events in their heyday may recall the Sunday quiz by Lord Sinclair that gave a place for music geeks to go head-to-head (usually nursing a sore one of their own). He’s since gone on to do pop quizzes and music-themed bingo nights in bars and at festivals all across the world. We’re excited to welcome a specially created one-off quiz to Sheffield for the first time.

Liam Walker & The Nevison Gang was formed from a combination of Liam’s solo material and various band members that have played in outfits together over the past 5 years.  Having recently played a handful of UK festivals this Summer, including Y-Not, the band are currently planning a short US tour for early next year followed by the recording of their debut album.

The band’s usual line up consists of Liam Walker (vocals/guitar),  Benjamin Edmonds (drums/vocals), Oliver Stone (bass/vocals), Jim Widdop (pedal steel/vocals)

Liam recently collaborated and played with The Cuckoo Clocks on their album release show and in keeping for this event, he has invited more musicians to join him on stage.  To date, this will be the biggest “Nevison Gang” experience and therefore something not to be missed!

“We are really looking forward to playing at the big WoW.  It stems from a legendary music venue in Sheffield and we feel it is a new chapter for the Sheffield music scene.”

Nick Ellis is dedicated to the concept of “Song” and “Melody”. Some people call it folk, some just call it good old fashioned song craft. Currently based in Liverpool, Ellis blends streetscape narrative-noir with a classic British acoustic approach. Using a blend of rhythmic attack and finger-quick lucidity, his sound has been described as “a conversation between Elvis Costello and John Martyn.”

On his songwriting Ellis says: “I see my songs as chapters and scenes. My albums as movies and books. Except, in this film, these stories are true…”

This event sees him in Sheffield performing some of these beautiful, crafted songs in an intimate environment.

Having enjoyed some success with their weekly Thursday film nights, Sheffield co-operative Regather launch a season of soundtracked screenings at Sensoria this year. Following an open call, Sheffield musicians have been selected to play a soundtrack live to the film of their choice. This event featuring music from King Capisce, who have just released their 3rd album ‘Momento Mori’ is the first of several such evenings and promises to be a very special evening of film and music.

We’re delighted to present a rare screening and live soundtrack to the 1983 version of The Moomins and the Comet, by original composer Graeme Miller. The original book Comet in Moominland (1946) by Tove Jansson. Written during a time of hardship and war, the tolerant world of Moominvalley offered a refuge from the harshness of reality – and is arguably still relevant today. The storyline sees Moomintroll and Sniff set off to the Observertory in the Lovely Mountains, to find out whether a comet will hit Earth. 

The music for the 1983 version was written and played by two Leeds-based post punk avant-garde theatre composers, a suitable complement to the programme’s surreal storylines and freaky but friendly ‘fuzzy’ felt animations.

Laibach on tour to North Korea! Go behind the walls with the Slovenian industrial group, when they as the first western band ever perform a concert in the hermetically sealed country. The Slovenian avant-garde industrial band, which with its hard-hitting march songs and completely totalitarian aesthetics has provoked both right and left. A perfect choice to celebrate the regime’s national holiday – apart from the fact that Laibach’s totalitarian style is also bold satire. But they do travel to North Korea, facilitated by the Norwegian provocateur and North Korea expert Morten Traavik.
