The highs and lows of taking a band out on the road.  Expect a full and frank account (including costings) from a cross section of industry experts ranging from tour managers to agents, promoters to festivals.

PLUGGING AND PITCHING – THE P’s & Q’s of PR

As an artist or band how can you best publicise your music? Through this series of expert guests from PR companies, music journalists as well as from bands that have done it all themselves without industry assistance, this panel will act as a practical guide on how to best create a publicity campaign and get your music out there, heard and talked about.

Tropicália is a must see for music lovers, set against the turbulent atmosphere of the 1960s, Tropicália documents the story of the movement in brazilian music during the period. The film traces the background of the movement and how it rebelled against political song and mindless pop to create a new Brazilian type of popular music. 

Sharing priceless footage of the musical acts and the controversy they caused, the film is a truly accurate, and special reflection of the period.

Looking Back In Anger? – TV Drama Then and Now

Episode 1 screening + discussion

Sensoria are pleased to welcome writer Peter Flannery, actor Christopher Eccleston and Ian Neil, Director of Music for Film and TV, Sony to discuss how Our Friends in the North became such a successful production, whether the themes still have resonance and to compare with current developments in TV drama in a digital age. Moderated by Martin Carter, Sheffield Hallam University.

• This event features a screening of Episode 1 (duration 1hour 10 minutes) followed by a panel discussion. Due to Christopher Eccleston’s work committments he is endeavouring to get to the event but may have to join us later in the evening. He is doing his utmost to be there but the event finish time is now 10.30 – 10.45pm.

2016 sees the 20th anniversary of the critically acclaimed BBC television series, Our Friends in the North. This seminal TV serial ostensibly charted the course of the lives of 4 friends from Newcastle from 1964 to 1995 (each with its own soundtrack). Throughout the nine episodes, the personal lives of the characters became intertwined with political struggles in their hometown and London. The Guardian rated it the third greatest television drama of all time and it also helped launch the acting careers of now-major figures in the industry including Daniel Craig, Gina McKee, Mark Strong and Christopher Eccleston. The backdrop of issues explored includes social housing, political and police corruption and the rise of Thatcherism.

But far from just celebrating the milestone, this well-crafted and brilliantly acted drama feels as relevant and poignant today as two decades ago – and also provides an opportunity to explore the current landscape of TV drama.

Yorkshire-based clasical-infused art rock trio Stems provide a live soundtrack to this trio of early movie magic by Georges Méliès.

The films include A Trip to the Moon (1902), The Kingdom of the Fairies (1903) and The Eclipse: Courtship of the Sun and Moon (1907).

In addition to the Méliès films , there will be 15 minutes of live score by Stems to footage from the Hubble Telescope.

 Sensoria proudly present White Star, the story of a sleazy Hollywood agent (Denis Hopper) and his single client Moody (Terrance Robay), an unknown keyboardist to punk-rock fame and ruin. 

The film, initially produced in German, will be English dubbed.

White star is a prime example of Dennis Hopper at his best. His mesmerising monologues and extremely convincing soliloquies depict Hopper as a frustrated, shameless music manager. The movie gives insight to the struggles in the music industry, and shows how complex and tense relationships between managers and clients were in the West-German punk-rock scene.

Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt’s globe-trotting schedule regularly takes her from such prestigious venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Her repertoire embraces the works of a diverse range of composers, including Couperin, Granados, Schumann and Debussy, and her performances have earned her a Royal Philharmonic Society Award and the accolade of being a Gramophone Magazine Artist of the Year.

Sensoria festival are pleased to present Little Miss Sunshine; an all time favourite story of a young girl journeying across the country with her dysfunctional family, to compete in the little miss sunshine beauty campaign.

This screening will take place in Sheffield’s Picture House Social Mini Cinema. 

The story begins in Albuquerque, USA. As the lives of each family members seem to be taking a turn for the worst, a glimmer of hope was seen in the youngest family member, Olive, having a chance to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine beauty campaign. The family gather together, some more willing than others to take the trip across country in their VW bus, to California. With more surprises and problems along the way, the trip forces the family together, resulting in an enjoyable ride for the viewers.

We are very sad to announce the sudden death of Professor Peter Blundell Jones.

We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
We will remember him and his outstanding contribution to architecture and will  especially think of him on Monday 3 October.
