For many fans, musicians and critics alike the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Rother is a key figure of the innovative music scene originating from Germany in the early 1970s. His music has been inspirational for generations of musicians – from David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, DEVO, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, U2, Autechre, Radiohead, Primal Scream, and beyond. 

Michael Rother was a member of Kraftwerk in 1971 and formed the legendary bands NEU! (with Klaus Dinger) and Harmonia (with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster) before releasing nine solo albums. 

Since the official re-release of the NEU! albums in 2001 Rother has played in many countries around the world and collaborated with numerous musicians and bands: John Frusciante, Secret Machines, Benjamin Curtis (School of Seven Bells), Josh Klinghoffer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, FM Einheit (ex Einstürzende Neubauten), Mick Harvey, Beaches, Dieter Moebius, Boxed In and Paul Weller – to name only a few. 

In 2010 Michael Rother formed the live project Hallogallo 2010 with Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Aaron Mullan (Tall Firs). Together they played numerous acclaimed concerts – e.g. ATP UK, Spain and USA. 

Between 2011 and 2016, Michael Rother toured many European countries as well as Russia, China and Japan. He also created film scores for the two feature films “Houston” and “The Robbers“. “Houston” by German director Bastian Günther was premiered at the legendary Sundance Film Festival and has since won several awards. 

In October 2015, Groenland Records released the career-spanning Harmonia boxset “Complete Works” for which Michael Rother contributed and edited archival recordings of the band. The release was welcomed by fans around the world and received great attention by the media as one of the highlights of 2015.

The February 2016 issues of Mojo and Uncut featured extensive interviews with Michael Rother and stories about his musical life. Iggy Pop invited Rother to present a 2-hour-program with a selection of his favourite tunes in Iggy Pop´s Radio Show @ BBC 6Music in February 2016 and Michael Rother played a sold out concert at Under the Bridge in London.

In October Michael Rother will present the ‘endless fast-forward’ music of NEU!  as well as tracks by Harmonia and from his catalogue of solo works. 

Michael Rother´s current live line-up includes Hans Lampe on drums and Franz Bargmann on guitar. Franz Bargmann is an ex-member of the Berlin-based band Camera. Hans Lampe contributed drumming on the album NEU! ´75 and was a member of La Düsseldorf.

GAZELLE TWIN: Kingdom Come + NEAR FUTURE

British artist Gazelle Twin presents Kingdom Come, a new audio visual performance in collaboration with Chris Turner and Tash Tung. 

This conceptual performance for two vocalists will be staged in six chapters, incorporating electronics, film, and a brand new soundtrack from Gazelle Twin, created from samples and live vocal manipulation. With the piece set on treadmills against a manic, illusory landscape, Kingdom Come places heightening physical demands on the performers, resulting in an exhausting, otherworldly climax. 

The show will feature friend and collaborator Natalie Sharp, aka Lone Taxidermist, and Stuart Warwick on vocals as well as Jez Bernholz performing. It combines theatre, live music and a running story among images of empty shopping centres and car parks. 

Taking its title from J. G Ballard’s final novel, Kingdom Come will play with notions of feralness, displacement and the uncanny in the contemporary British, urban landscape. 

The audiovisual performance, Kingdom Come, was curated by Gazelle Twin, along with film and audio direction from Chris Turner, and Tash Tung. Although the performers of the event will be Natalie Sharp, Stuart Warwick, and Jez Bernholz.

Followed by a debut live performance by Near Future.

The angular, percussive ‘Ideal Home’ from earlier this year was the debut single by Near Future – a new duo featuring Neil Arthur from Blancmange and art-pop electronic artist, Bernholz.

Beautifully arranged, abstract ideas – sawing violin sounds; applause and sudden bursts of heavier edged beats – illustrate their shared love of texture and atmosphere. Haunting but melodic too, the shared vocals and atmospheric production of ‘Ideal Home’ (with lyrics by Bernholz) maintain a balance between cold, detached observation and human feeling.

Near Future are recording more material throughout the year and plan to release their debut album in 2017. Their appearance at Sensoria will be their first major appearance.

About the Artists

Gazelle Twin is the creation of Elizabeth Bernholz, a UK based performance artist, composer and producer. Her high-concept works are often infused with dark imagery, challenging themes and a stark, unconventional performance style. 

Her most recent release – UNFLESH (Anti-Ghost Moon Ray/Last Gang Records, 2014) – was a visceral depiction of puberty and phobia, told through a spectrum of voices, from choral to spoken word, against distorted, unrelenting electronic pop, and was The Quietus’ Album of the Year 2014, and was included in the top albums of 2014 by The Guardian, Uncut, NPR, The New York Times and many more.

Chris Turner is a commercial music video and film director. He has worked with clients as diverse as Jaguar, Adidas and Sony as well as as artists such as Jay-z and Scanner. Chris has collaborated extensively with Gazelle Twin in the past 18 months, creating the striking films for her “AntiBody” and “Exorcise” tracks. His work has won both One Show Gold and D&AD awards.

Tash Tung is an up-and-coming music video director and photographer, having cut her teeth behind the scenes collaborating with Gazelle Twin and Chris Turner, as well as many other notable feature film and short-form directors. She studied at Chelsea College of Art and London College of Communication, exhibiting photographically under an alias at the Tate Britain, and has since curated two Coming-Of-Age seasons at the Prince Charles Cinema in London.

Performing Artists

Natalie Sharp, AKA Lone Taxidermist. Natalie’s work has achieved Viral success as her self painted images of album artwork for International Record Store Day, putting her on the global map and opening up the art of face painting to an international audience.

Stuart Warwick, who first started creating music under the alias Jacob’s Stories back in 2003, returned in 2013 with ‘The Butcher’s Voice’. The second album to be released under his married name, ‘The Butcher’s Voice’ is a collection of eleven lyrically provocative and spellbinding songs, perfectly showcasing the haunting purity of Warwick’s voice, hushed musical delivery, and his dark tongue-in-cheek humour.

Jez Bernholz aka BERNHOLZ is a solo artist and producer and is Gazelle Twin’s label mate and co-founder of Anti-Ghost Moon Ray Records. He is also one half of Near Future – a collaborative project with Neil Arthur from Blancmange.

Sensoria Festival are pleased to present Blancmange  – the English synthpop band who came to prominence with a string of hits in the early to mid-1980s. They will perform a rare and intimate concert at Sensoria as an aftershow to SynthFest.

20th Anniversary Event OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH with special guest, writer Peter Flannery.

Our Friends in the North is the classic saga of of the political and personal fortunes of four North East friends over  three decades of regional and national turbulence and social change. Peter Flannery, whose  grandfather was a Jarrow Marcher, wrote it originally for the stage, having been told by T Dan Smith – “Mr Newcastle” – that it would be “an epic of Shakespearean proportions!” T Dan Smith  would inspire the character Austin Donohue,  portrayed by master character actor Alun Armstrong. The  actors who portrayed Mary ,”Tosker” ,”Geordie” and Nicky faced on-screen roles that aged physically ,emotionally and politically from 1964 to1995. The series was a landmark in their subsequent careers.

Peter Flannery will talk exclusively about the extraordinary saga of how “Our Friends” was brought to the screen 20 years ago – an  unforgettable television drama he himself modestly called “a posh soap opera”! And how did Oasis get the best marketing campaign ever?
