Local musician James Leesley unfolds the story of Sheffield-based Studio Electrophonique; otherwise known as Ken Patten, an unsung hero in an unassuming Handsworth house which gave rise to a nascent generation of superstars such as ABC, The Human League, Heaven 17, Clock DVA and Pulp.

James Leesley (aka Studio Electrophonique) will play a few tracks live following the screening.

CHRIS WATSON

Sound recording specialist Chris Watson will present a new work ‘The Unquiet Don’, a dream journey above and below the surface of Sheffield rivers from the moorlands to the Ouse.

As a composer and sound recordist Watson specialises in creating spatial sound installations which feature a strong sense and spirit of place.

COMPOSER BUYOUTS
This hot-topic session, in association with the Musicians’ Union & Ivors Academy Composers Against Buyouts campaign, will address the issues surrounding the increasing number of media composers being asked for buyouts and put forward a fair and established way of paying composers.

NFTs – WHAT THEY MEAN FOR MUSIC & CREATIVE MEDIA
Our panel of digital pioneers and experts will discuss how NFTs (non-fungible tokens) can, or will, change the industry.
Featuring Des Agyekumhene, Ayo Banton & Jay Udo-Udoma – hosted by Dr. Hayleigh Bosher.

SCORING CONTEST – Western Works
This year’s Scoring Contest is our first archive challenge – featuring a specially edited clip Western Works, courtesy of the Yorkshire Film Archive, showing the cutlery-making process in 1920s Sheffield. A panel of industry experts will critique submissions on the day, including Gary Downing (Leland Originals), Sophy Purnell (The Composerworks), Connie Farr (ThinkSync Music) and Tom Sweet (British Council). Submissions are now closed.

RE-FRAMING THE PAST

This panel session will present case studies that explore innovative and interesting ways of presenting archive material, also discussing the challenges, opportunities and advantages of working with archive.

Guests include Rebecca Mark-Lawson (Tyke Films), Christopher Allen (The Light Surgeons), Désirée Reynolds and composer Mandy Wigby – hosted by Prof. Esther Johnson.

MUSIC FOR THE SMALL SCREEN

Our panel will discuss the challenges of writing for creative media including TV & Film. Guests include composers Oli Julian and Kz (Kwame Kwei-Armah Jnr), plus Tim Miles (Senior Creative Sync Manager @ Warner Music). Hosted by Connie Farr (ThinkSync Music).

Gustave Moreau’s painting L’Apparition depicts the character of Salome, long considered a lascivious, wanton woman. In this audiovisual work, musician Ela Orleans collages hundreds of preparatory images made by Moreau along with historical texts and glimpses of literary, artistic and dance works, sampling and remixing them into what she calls a ‘composed novel’, both celebrating and deconstructing Moreau’s work and historical narratives around Salome. The sonic accompaniment likewise distorts and transforms classical works, including Richard Strauss’s opera Salomé.

The British industrial town Hull could hardly have a more appropriate name. It is a fitting place for a nihilistic avant-garde collective, which at the end of the 1970s aggressively confronted every conceivable taboo: sex, pornography, violence and self-mutilation. But COUM Transmissions was only the beginning. Led by the artists Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti, COUM became the visionary and utterly unruly industrial/noise band Throbbing Gristle, which was named ‘the wreckers of civilisation’ by a shocked conservative politician. The many rare archive clips speak for themselves.

An engaging account of the life of Joseph Shabalala and his rise to international fame with his band Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The film covers the singer’s life, from his early years in rural South Africa to the band’s global success in the wake of their contributions to Paul Simon’s Graceland, which, despite breaking rank with the cultural boycott, went on to become one of South Africa’s most loved albums. The film also chronicles the complex history of isicathamiya music, in terms of both the political and musical forces which helped to form it.

Landing in New York at the age of 20, Patti Smith, found her natural home, first meeting Robert Mapplethorpe and holing up amongst the beatniks in the Chelsea Hotel.

The film charts her fifty-year career, and how she became a living legend without ever leaving the fringes of society. A punk at heart, she positions art as a political force and freedom as a necessity.
