World Premiere
In collaboration with the American Genre Film Archive, Sensoria Festival and Reel Steel present the notorious Taiwanese martial arts classic Shaolin Invincibles (1977), with an original live re-score from BAFTA-nominated videogame music composer Chipzel.
Two sword-wielding sisters seek revenge against the villains who murdered their family, but to do this they must battle Heibai Wuchang (Black and White guardians of the underworld), kung-fu gorillas, and a host of assassins intent on ending their quest.
Starring the magnificent Judy Lee (Queen Boxer) and the fierce Carter Wong (John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China), this supreme basher combines the electricity of a Super Nintendo game with exceptional fight choreography to deliver an unforgettable experience.
You’ve never seen a martial arts movie like this one, and featuring the premiere of an original live re-score.
The evening will also feature a special guest introduction from Dr Wayne Wong – School of East Asian Studies, University of Sheffield – lecturer and researcher across Martial Arts Studies, Culture and Society in East Asia and Action Cinema.

The Seer
The Seer is a multimedia live performance that combines spoken word, sound, theatre and video. The project is the creation of London-based artist Conny Prantera and is constructed from a series of her poems, collages and paintings that narrate the life of a prophet echoing of Homeric myth, traditional folksong and dreamlike memories.

Peiriant
Peiriant are a duo of violin and electric guitar, who play with melody and tonality to create atmosphere and soundscape. Electronic equipment, samples and found objects also add to their semi-improvised pieces, which are spun from grounded ideas.

Lily Fontaine
We are delighted to welcome Lily Fontaine (English Teacher) to SensoriaPro.
Raised across both sides of the Pennines, Lily Fontaine is a multimedia creative whose work combines social commentary and surrealism to form a foundational element of the band English Teacher’s creative output. English Teacher’s recent Mercury Prize-winning, top ten debut album ‘This Could be Texas’ saw critical acclaim, with The Times describing it as ‘One of the great debut albums of the 21st century.’ Alongside songwriting, Lily also DJs, writes prose and creates visual art.
Lily will be in conversation discussing career opportunities for artists in the North, arts funding and sync.

A panel of key figures from the world of podcasting will explore the opportunities and challenges of bringing the best in music and sound into your headphones.
The session will be hosted by Dino Sofos (founder of Persephonica and co-founder, Crossed Wires Festival) with guests including composer Luisa Gerstein, sound designer Nicholas Alexander (Novel) and independent music supervisor Ian Neil.

Nainita Desai
We are delighted to welcome Award-winning composer Nainita Desai.
Nainita will give an illustrated talk covering her huge catalogue of work, including Tales of Kenzera; Zau the EA video game, The Deepest Breath (Netflix Feature Doc) and Nautilus the upcoming action-adventure series for Amazon.
Acclaimed with three recent Emmy nominations and a win in 2022 for The Reason I Jump, Nainita Desai is a Critics Choice nominated composer, and winner of an RTS award and the World Soundtrack Awards 2021 for Discovery of the Year. A double BIFA and Cinema Eye Honors nominee, BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and IFMCA Breakthrough Composer of the Year 2019, Nainita was described by Empire magazine as one of the top 5 composers to watch for 2022 who also won the Women In Film & TV Award for Creative Technology 2022.
Amongst her work on various BAFTA, Academy Award, and Emmy acclaimed productions, 2024 projects include Sundance Feature Nocturnes, Nautilus the upcoming fantasy action-adventure series for Amazon/Disney+ and ITV Drama The Tower.
Nainita’s recent projects include the hit Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible for which she earned a Primetime Emmy nomination. In addition, Nainita’s work on John Batsekk’s feature The Deepest Breath (A24, Netflix) earned her Critics Choice, HMMA, ASCAP, Camille and SCL award nominations for Best Original Score. Her other notable credits include the Oscar-nominated and BAFTA and Cannes-winning feature documentary For Sama, along with the Sundance-winning film The Reason I Jump and the Emmy-nominated score for Body Parts. Recent projects include the BBC action thriller series Crossfire, Sky comedy drama Funny Woman, 2024 Sundance craft-winning feature doc Nocturnes for Sandbox films and the landmark natural history series Predators for Sky/Netflix and the iconic Call of Duty video game franchise.
Nainita has also scored landmark natural history series Earthsounds for Apple TV+, feature doc The Contestant for Hulu, EA video game Tales of Kenzera: Zau, and the James Cameron series Ocean Xplorers for the BBC / Nat Geo. Her upcoming work extends to video games for Sony Interactive as well as feature documentaries for Netflix, Universal and series for National Geographic and SKY documentaries.

Scoring Contest – Threads
- The ever-popular SCORING CONTEST returns. This panel session offers a unique challenge each year. Composers can submit their music to a specially selected film clip – a shortlist is then ‘critiqued’ by our panel of experts on the day and a winner is voted by both the panel and the audience. This year sees a challenging brief to compose new music for the trailer to the 1984 docu-drama Threads*.

- As well as securing a free Delegate Pass for SensoriaPro 2025, the winner will enjoy the opportunity to have 2 tracks professionally mastered by The Bowling Green Mastering (Dean Honer) and receive a year’s print and digital subscription to Sound On Sound magazine.

BISHI is an independent artist, composer and producer born in London of Bengali heritage, known for her trademark electric sitar and four-octave vocal range.
BISHI is celebrated for the use of groundbreaking technology in her live performances, with her first AV installation ‘Reflektions,’ becoming the first artist’s work to be projection-mapped across UNESCO World Heritage sites, The Queen’s House & Royal Naval College, London.

Sonido Polifonico presents an evening of audio-visual delights in a Tudor House in association with Sensoria.
Milkweed
Milkweed’s “Folklore 1979” takes its lyrics exclusively from an academic journal published by the Folklore Society and renders it into a piece of music that blurs the lines between what is found and what is created. Across a beguiling 11 minutes, Milkweed unspool like a single disjointed dream narrative, taking in ritual, extinction, migration, esoteric cosmogony and Arthurian legend.
This new collection also offers the duo’s third such work in as many years. In 2022 they released Myths and Legends of Wales, which saw them hit on a formula that has served them well ever since: a short album inspired by the discovery, manipulation and interpretation of a specific folkloric text. In this case it was a 1984 title by Tony Roberts. The Mound People followed in 2023, this time inspired by a 1974 text on preserved bronze-age human remains by Danish archaeologist Peter Glob.
The duo describe their sound as ‘Slacker Trad’ which is both true and somehow insufficient. On the face of it, their musical concerns are transatlantic – they follow the rich creative line that runs between British traditional music and the songs and tunes of the eastern United States. In reality, their scope is global and rooted in deep time, with influences from prehistory bleeding into a troubled and troubling modern era. As a result, their music doesn’t sit easily anywhere, but ricochets between bewitching Appalachian folk music and disconcerting hauntological experimentation.

The Bloody Bones
The Bloody Bones is a new duo project featuring Jon Griffin (Sairie / Sweet Williams) and Rebecca Tann. They previously performed as Twenty One Crows, dark and often political storytelling.
We have no further information but we know that anything Jon is involved in is touched with quality! Anyone who came to see Sairie in July will know this too.

Sensoria 2024 will bring The Light Organ to the John Lewis Building, formerly Cole Brothers, the first event in the Grade-II-Listed building which sits opposite Sheffield City Hall.

An interactive, playful artwork, The Light Organ uses microphones to turn sounds into a sculptural array of light.
From 1 -12 Oct, festivalgoers can sing, talk, clap – and make all sorts of sounds – to create a multicoloured sound and light display.
Entrance is free, no ticket required.

Hear about the making of, and the inspiration behind, the new Black British Gothic Horror short based on the true story of Kai Akosua Mansah who is buried in Sheffield General Cemetery. The film follows student Abba-Yaa, who is haunted by Kai, the child spirit she is researching. Abba-Yaa gets more than she bargained for when she discovers the true horrors of the past.
The conversation with writer Désirée Reynolds, writer/director Eelyn Lee & Dr Maisha Wester will be illustrated with clips from the film.

Based on the local and natural history of her neighbourhood in Sheffield, Liz Hanks’ Land album explores both the loss of nature in the urban environment and forgotten natural worlds, whilst celebrating the green spaces that remain.
As I began exploring ideas for this album, I was drawn to the sounds from my local area in Sheffield. Field recordings gathered from the woods and park made me wonder, what was this area was like before the housing and roads were built?
I discovered that before the area of Meersbrook was built there was a beautiful valley called ‘Rush Dale’. Inspired by reading written accounts of this lost valley and looking at old photos and paintings I set out writing music to recreate these lost times and places.

Juliana is a recorder player, whistle player and vocalist based in Sheffield.
Her solo work combines ambient improvisation, folk, experimental techniques and live electronics- much of her work is inspired by nature, and focuses on using music as a form of collective communication, expression and connection.
